One of the main factors is an increase in global average temperatures which causes melting of polar ice and an increase in sea levels. When the ice in Greenland and Antarctica melts, the volume of water entering the ocean causes flooding in coastal areas. In addition, climate change impacts the hydrological cycle. Extreme weather, such as prolonged heavy rain, is becoming increasingly common. For example, the Sub-Saharan African region is facing increasing rainfall intensity which means the soil is unable to absorb water quickly, resulting in an increased risk of flooding. In this context, data shows that flooding caused by extreme rainfall has increased by more than 50% in the last decade. On the other hand, global warming also causes changes in wind patterns that influence the movement of weather systems. When low and high pressure systems move in, they can trigger sudden heavy rains in an area. For example, in 2021, major floods hit Germany and Belgium, damaging critical infrastructure and causing significant economic losses. The agricultural sector is one of the most affected, because excessive water damages crops and disrupts food production. This could lead to a food crisis in countries that depend on agriculture. Many countries also experience rising infrastructure-related recovery costs following flood disasters, diverting resources that would otherwise be used for social and economic development. Floods due to climate change also threaten public health. Stagnant water can become a breeding ground for diseases, such as malaria and leptospirosis. As a result, the public health system has had to contend with a surge in disease cases, especially in areas with weak health infrastructure. To reduce the impact of flooding due to climate change, adaptation strategies must be implemented. This includes building flood-resistant infrastructure, improving drainage systems, and good land management. Increasing public awareness regarding flood risks is also very important. In this context, government and non-government organizations need to work together to implement training programs and increase community preparedness. Facing the threat of global flooding, reducing greenhouse gas emissions must also be a priority. The use of renewable energy and sustainable agricultural practices can help slow global warming and reduce the risk of future flooding. Without immediate collective action, the impacts of climate change will continue to worsen flooding situations around the world, causing immeasurable damage to people and the environment.
